There is no right answer for this, but I’ll try my best. You already know how important water is for your health and all the beneficial functions it fulfills.

The question that often arises is whether you should drink while eating or not. As I said, there is no concrete answer, but it depends more on your personal preferences.

One thing that worries many people is that drinking water while eating could dilute the stomach acid and thus lead to improper digestion. This is where the opinions drift apart. Some say the impact of drinking water is so small that it won’t have any negative effects while others say that even changing the acidity level in your stomach a little bit will lead to suboptimal digestion.

Studies actually did find something interesting, especially if you want to lose some weight. They compared the weight loss of two group who ate a low-calorie diet. One group drank 0,5 liters (two 8 ounce glasses) of water before each meal, while the other group did not.

The results were interesting because those who drank the water before each meal, consumed on average 70-90 calories less than the control group and while all participants lost weight over a 12-week period, the water group lost additional 3-5 pounds.

This is quite good for just adding one little habit, so drinking water before your meals might be a good idea if you want to shed a few pounds.

According to Michael F. Picco, M.D. from the Mayo Clinic, drinking while eating might actually be beneficial for your digestion because the water helps to break down the food and also softens the stool which prevents constipation.

Another interesting fact is the temperature that is ideal for drinking. While some suggest the ideal temperature lies between 15-21°C others say that warm beverages are better for digestions.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine and practitioners of Ayurveda advise against cold beverages while eating.

The best thing you can do is find it out for yourself. You now know some things to look out for. Drinking water right before eating is beneficial for weight loss, but if you suffer from heartburn or reflux disease you should not drink too much water while eating.

Make sure to drink enough water during the day, that’s the most important thing.

Steps to take:

  • Experiment with drinking water before, during and after meals.
  • Check how much you eat when drinking water before a meal.
