I’ve already mentioned how good walking is for your health and science confirmed this while also showing that sitting is really bad. As you already read, commuting is one of our main sources of sitting time, which amounts to a total of 9.3 hours a day, remember?
One of the simplest things to do to reduce sitting and increase walking and standing is to change your commute.
Instead of using your car and getting hit by traffic, take your bike or public transport to get to work. Even if the station is a few blocks away, leave 10 minutes early and walk over there.
If your work is close to your home and can even ditch all the means of transport and simply walk to work. You remember those scenes in various movies where people walk to work and suddenly all the world is colorful and happy? Although it may be a bit exaggerated that’s how you will feel like when you walk to work instead of taking your car.
Although this is simple it’s not always easy. Your work might be too far away to walk or public transport takes too long. In that case, start slow. See if you can use the public transport once a week, maybe on a Friday?
There is always something you can do. You could also park your car a few blocks away from your work and walk the few blocks. You’ll certainly feel better if you get some fresh air and spend a couple of minutes outside, instead of running from inside to inside.
Researchers even confirm that driving is the most stressful way to commute and affects basically all areas of your life negatively.
Your physical health, your mental health, your relationships and your happiness.
The same way driving affects your negatively, riding your bike or taking public transport manifests itself in positive ways.
According to a Swedish study, commuters who took those two means of transport became more social and engaged more with their city.
Another study from the UK found out that ditching the car for commuting made the participants of the study feel better and increase their concentration.
Not taking your car to work is one of the best things you can do to get healthier and happier and probably more productive at your work. Besides that it is not only free but likely will save you a ton of money.
Steps to take:
- Think about ways NOT to use your car for your commute
- Don’t use it once a week and see how it goes.
